A (sort of) "Friends" cast reunion is heading to NBC in February as part of a tribute to longtime comedy director James Burrows, the network announced at the Television Critics Association's press tour Wednesday.
Burrows directed 15 episodes of "Friends," including its
pilot, Entertainment Weekly reported. The beloved sitcom first premiered in 1994 and aired for 10 seasons on NBC.
NBC entertainment chairman Robert Greenblatt said that while all six original cast members — Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc, Matthew Perry, and David Schwimmer — have agreed to take part, they may not all be featured on the two-hour tribute program at the same time.
"I'm hoping all six will be in same room at same time," Greenblatt told reporters, according to EW. "I'm not sure we can logistically pull it off."
E! Online reported that the stars and "Friends" co-creator Marta Kaufman have been against doing a scripted reunion special, so the Burrows tribute may be the closest thing fans can get to a true reuniting of the cast.
"[Fans] have to let it go," Kaufman told E! last year. "It'll never happen — not happening."
The cast has stayed in touch over the years, reuniting for special occasions such as Aniston's wedding.
While the potential "Friends" reunion is garnering all the excitement, the February special is about Burrows.
TVLine.com reported that Burrows recently reached his 1,000-episode mark when he directed an episode of NBC's midseason comedy "Crowded" in November.
He has also directed episodes of other comedy series, including "The Big Bang Theory," "The Bob Newhart Show," "Cheers," "Fraiser," "Mike & Molly," "Taxi," and "Will & Grace."
Entertainment Weekly said that "The One with the Reunion?" "Friends" special will air Feb. 21. "Friends" fans on social media appeared to be excited about the possibility of seeing the gang together again.
