Gerardo Ortiz, a Mexican singer, was arrested in Guadalajara over the weekend and charged with "criminal exaltation" for a violent music video covering his song "Fuiste mia," reported
Billboard magazine.
The video had generated more than 30 million views on Vevo before being taken down.
In the video, Ortiz depicted a drug lord wronged by a straying lover. The video includes soft porn, and images of Ortiz shooting someone in the head and putting a woman in a trunk before setting the car on fire. The song's title translates to "You Used To Be Mine."
The video drew protests and the Mexican government issued warrants for the arrest of Ortiz and the video's producer last week.
Ortiz was arrested Saturday when he arrived at the airport in Guadalajara, Billboard reported, citing Mexican newspaper E! Universal.
Ortiz posted a $2,700 bail on Sunday,

If Ortiz is found guilty, the
Houston Chronicle said, "a charge of criminal exaltation is relatively minor and usually comes with a one- to six-month prison sentence."
A
Change.org petition calling for the removal of the video drew more than 7,000 signatures.
Mexico's government secretary issued a statement against the video in March, according to Billboard.
“Women tend to be portrayed in campaigns, shows and music videos, ads and other forms of communication under stereotypes that foster violence against them,” read the statement. “The Government Secretary expresses its deep rejection of this content, and particularly the video by Gerardo Ortiz that clearly invites to violence against women in addition to minimizing and normalizing this social ill.”
In April, Ortiz defended the video as "pure fiction."
“No offense, but it’s a good thing that all the organizations that defend women’s rights have been able to use these platforms to get their message cross and defend their rights," he said at the time, according to Billboard. "I hope this clarifies things. This is the artist speaking; the fictional character is in the video.”
Twitter users objected to the arrest.
