Glory Johnson is pregnant with twins, the WNBA star announced this week, just a month after marrying — and then filing for an annulment with — fellow basketball player Brittney Griner.
Johnson, who plays for the Tulsa Shock, revealed Monday that she is nine weeks pregnant with twins conceived through IVF. Captioning a photo on Instagram, Johnson compared her twins to the “Doubles-Doubles” she scored during her sports career, and even quoted the Bible.
“It has always been a dream of mine to start a family with someone I love,”
Johnson told People magazine. The 24-year-old first announced earlier this month that she was pregnant and would be putting her athletic career on hold to start a family with her then-new wife, Griner.
“Being a professional athlete that plays year-round, there is never a perfect time to get pregnant without putting my career on hold," she said. "The entire process, from learning our fertility options, to making sacrifices necessary nine months before the child is born, is merely preparing me to become a great wife and an even better mother."
Before their relationship went awry, Johnson posted on Instagram to announce she had a bun in the oven.
However, Johnson would not be introducing her child into “the Johnson Griner Family,” as Griner filed for an annulment the day after the announcement. The WNBA stars, who wed in May, had been in a physical altercation weeks before that led to both women being taken into
custody on April 22, Sports Illustrated reported.
Although it is unclear as to whether Johnson or Griner was the aggressor in the incident, Johnson claimed that she was “being fought.”
“I’m not just gonna sit back . . . there’s probably a better way to handle it. But at the time . . . you’re just thinking of protecting yourself and doing what you need to do to stand up for yourself,” she said, according to SI.
Johnson said that she was “not going to throw Brittney under the bus . . . and she’s not going to throw me under the bus."
She also admitted at the time that she and Griner were still considering starting a family.
“A lot of people know we were considering the process — a lot of friends, anyway. But with two women, you know, it’s not like you can get somebody pregnant overnight. It’s a very huge process,” she explained to SI.
