Heather Nauert, the "Fox & Friends" morning cable news show anchor, has been hired as spokeswoman for the State Department, Bloomberg News reported Saturday, citing two sources.
Nauert is the second Fox News employee to be hired by the state department, led by Secretary of State Rex Tillerson. Longtime Fox United Nations reporter Jonathan Wachtel is director of communications and spokesman at the U.S. Mission to the United Nations.
President Donald Trump has mentioned "Fox & Friends" is one of his favorite news programs and has granted exclusive telephone and live interviews with the program.
Nauert first joined Fox News in 1998 and rejoined as an anchor in 2007, according to her Fox News biography. She is a former general assignment correspondent for ABC News, contributing to "World News Tonight," "Good Morning America," and "Nightline." Nauert worked for ABC News from 2005 to 2007.
At Fox News, her work included coverage on the 2013 government shutdown, the crisis in Syria and the Benghazi, Libya, attack, according to the network. Nauert had previously co-hosted the former "Big Story with John Gibson & Heather Nauert" and "Good Day New York" at WYNY-TV.
Outside the newsroom, Nauert has worked as a government affairs consultant on health insurance, tax, and Social Security issues in Washington, D.C., noted Fox News. She earned her communication bachelor's degree from Mt. Vernon College in Washington, D.C., and journalism master's degree from Columbia University.
She is also a member of the Council on Foreign Relations, an independent, nonpartisan membership organization, think tank, and publisher that helps the public better understand world and foreign policy choices of the United States and other countries.
Former Fox News analyst and Republican strategist Monica Crowley was originally expected to take a senior foreign policy communications role in Trump's administration under former national security advisor, noted Politico.
She declined to take the role in January after facing scrutiny by CNN over multiple passages that appeared to be plagiarized in her 2012 book, "What the (Bleep) Just Happened."
