A female humpback whale rammed a whale-watching boat as tourists captured a video of the encounter off the coast of Maui, Hawaii, last week.
Jennifer Nap took the video of the whale and her calf and posted it to YouTube on Jan. 8 with the description: "While on a whale watching tour in Maui, our tour guides stopped the boat and shut down the engines so we could hear the whale 'songs' on their hydrophone. A few minutes later, a female and her calf approached us, and had no problems taking on the 25' boat we were in."
The huge whale slaps her pectoral fin against the water as she approaches the 25-foot inflatable boat.
"This is so awesome!" a man exclaims as the whale swims under the boat.
Nap told GrindTV that the whale moved the boat about five feet when she hit it.
"As soon as she was done pushing us aside she dove under, then popped right back up on the other side with her calf," Nap said.
Ultimate Whale Watch CEO Lee James said the whale likely was likely distracted by her calf and a nearby male as opposed to trying to warn the tourists.
"We think she simply wasn’t paying attention and bumped the boat, then carried on pec slapping like nothing happened," James told GrindTV.
Twitter users seemed impressed by the encounter.
