Signifying that the end is near for Internet Explorer, Microsoft has turned to its new Web browser, currently dubbed "Project Spartan," as the default for Windows 10.
"Project Spartan is Microsoft’s next generation browser, built just for Windows 10. We will continue to make Internet Explorer available with Windows 10 for enterprises and other customers who require legacy browser support,"
a Microsoft spokesperson told Business Insider.
Internet Explorer has been the subject of widespread ridicule, including being known as the No. 1 Web browser for downloading other browsers. Its share of the browser market has dwindled from more than 80 percent at its height to
less than 30 percent, USA Today reported.
First announced in January, Project Spartan was designed with mobile devices in mind and includes features such as integration with Cortana.
“Microsoft is making compelling software right now, software as good as Google and Apple. But they still have a perception of lagging and they are trying to break that perception and that includes retiring brands,” analyst Colin Gillis said, according to USA Today.
Microsoft marketing chief Chris Capossela said the company currently is conducting market research to determine a new name for the Project Spartan browser, which
likely will include Microsoft in the name, The Verge reported.
Twitter users welcomed the browser’s demise.
