A massive internet outage hit several major cities across the U.S. on Monday, Fox News noted, and Comcast later admitted there were issues with its Xfinity internet service, citing an “an external network issue.”
Outage monitoring website Down Detector said Comcast had been having issues since 1:04 PM EST, noting that more than 10,000 outage reports had since been logged in areas including Portland, Denver, Seattle, Chicago, New York, San Francisco, Houston, Minneapolis, and Boston.
Comcast reassured customers that it was working on fixing the problem.
Internet service reportedly was restored by Tuesday, but the outage left Comcast attempting to pacify a number of irate customers.
CNN reported the outage was due to a misconfiguration at multinational internet provider Level 3, which is responsible for delivering content to other internet services including Comcast.
In a statement to CNN, Level 3’s owner, CenturyLink, said the service was disrupted by a “configuration error” and that technicians were able to restore service in 90 minutes.
The Wired reported that, according to network analysts, the misconfiguration was a routing issue that affected several companies including Spectrum, Verizon, Cox, and RCN across the country.
