iPhone X screens are freezing in cold weather and Apple said it was working on a fix, adding it was aware the device’s surface could become temporarily unresponsive to touch after a dramatic drop in temperatures or when exposed to colder environments.
Apple confirmed the issue on Friday after phone users posted reports on Reddit of their devices becoming unresponsive in colder weather, The Verge reported.
The Reddit thread was started by a user posting under the name darus214.
“I've noticed that my iPhone X screen becomes very unresponsive as soon as I step outside. It literally takes two seconds from going inside to the cold outdoors and my screen stops being very responsive.”
The post soon drew dozens of comments from others experiencing similar issues.
“I’m having the same problem, noticed it the first day and it’s pretty concerning being that it’s only just starting to get cold and already a huge issue,” another user posted.
Apple released a statement to The Loop about the problem.
“After several seconds the screen will become fully responsive again. This will be addressed in an upcoming software update,” Apple said.
Meanwhile, in a support page entry, Apple noted that low and high temperature conditions could cause an iOS device “to change its behavior to regulate its temperature.”
The company further recommended that all devices be operated in ambient temperatures between 32 and 95 degrees Fahrenheit.
Endgadet noted that devices should only become unresponsive for a few seconds before full functionality was restored.
However, phone users who have found the problem persisted recommended locking and unlocking the screen to regain full use again.
