Jamie Zimmerman, ABC News' medical expert and doctor, drowned after being swept out to sea while on vacation in Hawaii.
Zimmerman, 31, was attempting to cross the Lumahai River on the Hawaiian island of Kauai on Monday when she lost her footing and was washed out to sea, reported
Variety.
Lifeguards found her unresponsive in the water about 200 yards east of the mouth of the Lumahai River. Zimmerman was transported to Wilcox Memorial Hospital where she was pronounced dead, said
Hawaii News Now.
Zimmerman's mother posted a message on her daughter's
Facebook page, confirming the death.
"Those of you who knew Jamie or perhaps read some of her writings knew that she loved people above all else," Jordan Zimmerman wrote. "It was her passion to be of service and teaching meditation was her calling. In her short 31 years Jamie traveled the globe representing America as a caring mindfulness ambassador."
"Her accomplishments included helping Congolese refugees in Zambia, volunteering in a cash-strapped hospital in India, building classrooms in Uganda, and working with indigenous people on the Amazon in Peru. Jamie served as a United Nations Global Health representative in Haiti and she even taught meditation at the U.S. Capitol."
ABC News president James Goldston said Zimmerman contributed to research for ABC's medical unit along with offering meditation sessions for the ABC News staff in New York. She also made a documentary on Congolese refugee camps, said Variety.
Others shared their condolences on social media.
