Rapper and entrepreneur Jay Z has bought the Armand de Brignac champagne company, known for its $300 metallic gold bottles of bubbly.
Jay Z, whose real name is Shawn Carter, and his wife, Beyonce Knowles, are often seen drinking the champagne. Apparently, the singer decided his love for the drink, also called “Ace of Spades,” had led him to a solid business opportunity.
The champagne is owned by New York-based Sovereign Brands and is made at a French, family-run vineyard that employs fewer than 20 people.
Although the terms of the deal have not been made public, an
emailed statement from Sovereign told The New York Times, “We have had a wonderful relationship with Jay Z throughout the years since he first discovered Armand de Brignac. He became interested in owning the brand and made us an offer we simply couldn’t refuse.”
The Times also pointed to Jay Z’s well-known love of the brand, including a 2012 fundraiser for President Barack Obama that featured 350 bottles of the champagne in the popular gold bottles.
“Owners of the ‘Vault’ suites at the Barclays Center arena in Brooklyn, home of the Brooklyn Nets, have access to a Champagne bar serving Armand de Brignac,” the Times wrote. Jay Z used to be a part owner of the Nets.
Fans were a little envious online of Jay Z’s ability to buy the champagne brand.
