Hip-Hop Star Wyclef Jean to Perform at GOP Convention

By    |   Wednesday, 15 August 2012 04:03 PM EDT

Sponsored by "Got Your 6"and Lifetime television, the singer-rapper Wyclef Jean will perform at an event at the upcoming Republican National Convention in Tampa, Fla.

The concert, which is scheduled to take place on August 29 at Tampa’s Galzer Children’s Museum, will be co-hosted by Meghan and Cindy McCain and feature a number of Republican governors and congressional members.

Proceeds from the event will go to Got Your 6, a nonpartisan organization that assists military personnel as they seek to reintegrate into civilian life.

A former member of the group the Fugees, Jean will be taking the performing spot of country music singer Randy Travis, who last Tuesday was arrested in Texas for allegedly driving while under the influence of alcohol.

Travis himself had stepped in to perform after Willie Nelson withdrew from headlining the Got Your 6 event.

Jean, having moved to the United States from Haiti at the age of nine, has been highly successful in establishing himself as a rapper, singer, and record producer.

A couple of years ago he also took a step to enter Haitian politics at the highest level in his native country. In 2010 he filed for candidacy in the Haitian presidential election slated to be held that year.

However, the Electoral Commission in Haiti subsequently ruled Jean ineligible to run because he had not met the requirement of having been a resident in Haiti for five years.
