Former New York Giants player Jeremy Shockey said he was questioned by FBI agents about his relationship with an alleged leader of an international drug and gambling ring who once played college football for the University of Southern California.
Federal agents quizzed the NFL veteran last week in Miami about his friend Owen Hanson, reported the
New York Post.
Hanson was charged last month with running ODOG Enterprise, a multimillion-dollar operation which the
Los Angeles Times reported in January used a collection of runners and bookies across the United States and accept bets on football and baseball games. Kenny Hiliski, a U.S. resident living in Peru, ran the organization's gambling operations, prosecutors said, according to the newspaper.
According to the Times, an indictment said Hiliski operated numerous websites such as betodog.com and coordinated payments and directed distributions. Los Angeles private investigator Daniel Portley-Hanks would make sure debts were paid by getting information on delinquent gamblers and making threats, prosecutors charged, per the Times.
The indictment said the threats would include packages with pictures of the debtor's spouse and information on other family members, according to the newspaper.
Shockey, a former University of Miami star, played 10 seasons in the NFL, the last in 2011. He caught 37 touchdown passes, most of those during his six years with the New York Giants. He also played the New Orleans Saints and the Carolina Panthers before he retired.
