Jimmy Carter announced to an audience Monday night that he voted for Bernie Sanders instead of Hillary Clinton in the 2016 Democratic Primary.
During a presentation Carter and Sanders gave together on human rights at the Carter Center in Atlanta on Monday, Carter said, “Can you all see why I voted for him?” USA Today reported.
It was the first admission from Carter that he didn’t support Clinton in the primary.
Carter also said that “dissatisfaction with the existing system of politics” resulted in President Trump’s election, according to USA Today. “People were willing just to take a chance and to abandon democracy and what we knew about its basic principles and try something new, no matter what it was,” he added.
Carter has not been supportive of the Clintons since Bill Clinton was a candidate in 1992. He declined to endorse the 42nd president in both elections and skipped the Democratic National Convention entirely in 1996, according to The Washington Post.
Carter also endorsed Barack Obama in 2008, saying that Hillary Clinton needed to “give it up,” The Washington Post reported. He did endorse Clinton during the Democratic National Convention in 2016 after voting for Sanders in the primary, however.
Sanders spoke at length during the presentation with Carter, saying, “If we had 80 percent of the people voting in this country, the Republican Party would be a significant minority. So we have got to get people involved. And you do that by being honest about the real problems they face and come up with real solutions.”
Twitter showed the usual political divide.
