Joey Feek, one half of the husband-and-wife country music duo Joey + Rory, put on a brave smile in hospice care this week in a heartwarming photo with her young daughter Indiana and sister Jody.
Feek, 40, has been battling stage IV cervical cancer since 2014 and recently decided to stop treatment several months ago after the chemotherapy she was receiving was
ruled ineffective, Us Weekly reported.
The photo shows Feek, her daughter, and her sister Jody wearing matching checkered hats.
In an interview published in The Tennessean Monday, Feek said she was "disappointed" with her cancer diagnoses but has come to terms with it.
"I thought, 'I'm going to be that exception,'" she said. "I'm going to be that statistic that stands out and says, 'She fought it . . . We did the most extreme surgery we can do in the gynecologic world, and she did well.' But for whatever reason, it wasn't enough, and God had different plans. I was disappointed. I was exhausted."
"More than anything, I felt like I failed at something. I thought I did everything. But God decided for me that my job of singing for people down here is my legacy, and he needs me singing up there. That's how I look at it," Feek said.
Feek's husband Rory Feek shared a personal recording Wednesday of a pregnant Joey in celebration of their daughter turning 21 months old.
"We're going to sleep tonight remembering the morning we welcomed her into the world," Rory Feek wrote on Facebook. "We had no idea when we woke up that day what a gift God was about to give us."
Joey and Rory Feek married in 2002, and Joey gave birth to their daughter Indiana in February 2014. Their band, Joey + Rory, formed in 2008 after taking third place on CMT's "Can You Duet," and went on to win an Academy of Country Music Award in 2010.
