Jonah Hill Apology Follows TMZ Video of Him Hurling a Gay Slur

By    |   Thursday, 05 June 2014 12:38 PM EDT

Jonah Hill apologized Tuesday night after a video of him hurling a gay slur at a bothersome paparazzo leaked online.

It started over the weekend when the 30-year-old actor was spotted out and about with a friend in Los Angeles. In a video posted on TMZ Tuesday. a group of paparazzi tails the duo and begins making fun of Hill's floral-print board shorts.

"I like the shorts though, bro. They are pretty sexy," one of the shutterbugs says to the Academy Award-nominated actor before trailing him through the streets.

As the photographer in question goes to leave, he says, "Have a good day, enjoy," to which Hill responds with a gay slur.

Hill, who was supposed to be promoting his upcoming film "22 Jump Street," then used the first part of his "Tonight Show" interview Tuesday night to apologize for his comment.

"I didn't mean this in a homophobic way," Hill said, appearing to become emotional. "I think that doesn't matter . . . Words have weight and meaning. And the word I chose was grotesque."

"My heart is broken. And I genuinely am deeply sorry to anyone who's ever been affected by that term in their life."

Hill has been a vocal proponent of gay rights in the past. In November, he joined other celebrities in protesting Russia's anti-gay laws by tweeted a photo of himself in a shirt with the words "Love Conquers Hate" on it in Russian.
