Reality TV star and tattoo artist Kat Von D has sparked ire over the name of a lipstick color in her makeup line: "Underage Red."
Writer Parker Molloy called out the lipstick name on Twitter.
That post resulted in a flurry of attention from news outlets, but Molloy seemed surprised by the response to her tweet.
"I don't generally wear much makeup, but as a writer, I've always loved the sometimes nonsensical names nail polishes, eye liners, and lipsticks are given. I mean,
how many different ways can you say 'This is red'?" Molloy told The Huffington Post.
She said headlines have over stated her response.
“I bristled thinking about the connotations of the name, which seems to view being under the age of consent through a sexualized lens,” she added. “Still, I wasn’t ‘angry,’ ‘furious’ or ‘outraged’ as a number of headlines have laid out.”
Von D posted a response to a critic on Twitter.
This isn’t the first time Von D has offended people with her a lipstick name. In 2013, Sephora pulled a shade called “Celebutard,” and issued an apology.
People mentioned the "Underage Red" color at the time of the "Celebutard" controversy, but the questionable name seems to have escaped a backlash until now.
Business Insider pointed out that makeup brand MAC also has a shade of gloss named “Underage.”
Von D’s makeup line is the most successful of her ventures, which also include tattoo artistry, a clothing line, and books, Business Insider said.
Twitter users shared mixed reactions to the name.
