Celebrity photographer Kevin Abosch's potato photo hanging on a wall was so admired by a dinner guest that the unnamed European businessman peeled off $1 million for it.

Abosch, 46, is accustomed to shooting celebrities like Johnny Depp, Dennis Hoffman, Yoko Ono, Steven Spielberg and Pakistani youth activist Malala Yousafzai, according to London's Sunday Times, and he commissions his photos from $280,000 and up.

Abosch told the Sunday Times that "Potato #345" was an Irish spud he photographed in 2010, shot on a black background with a single light using a digital camera. He conceded that some people would find it "absurd" to pay 750,000 pounds, or $1.08 million for the picture.

"I see commonalities between humans and potatoes that speak to our relationship as individuals within a collective species," Abosch said, according to CNN. "Generally, the life of a harvested potato is violent and taken for granted. I use the potato as a proxy for the ontological study of the human experience."

Abosch said he was hosting the businessman for a meal when he spotted the hanging photo on the wall and developed an appetite for it, according to the Daily Mail.

"It's not the first time that someone has bought the art right off my wall," said Abosch. "We had two glasses of wine and he said, 'I really like that.' Two more glasses of wine and he said: 'I really want that.' We set the price two weeks later."

If verified, that price would make the picture the 15th most expensive photo ever sold if the price could be verified, said CNN. The photograph "Rhein II" by Andreas Gursky, is currently the most expensive picture ever sold, at $4.3 million at a 2011 Christie's auction.

The spud picture surprised many on social media.
