Kevin Spacey's win for Best Actor in a Television Series Drama at the Golden Globes Sunday evening for "House of Cards" wasn’t surprising, but the F-bomb he dropped during his emotional acceptance speech sure shocked a few.
Esquire magazine gave Spacey the "Biggest Boss at the Golden Globes" award, which he seems to have earned strictly with attitude. "Firstly, he went up to the stage holding a stiff drink in his hand. Secondly, he kicked off his speech in a distinctly Frank Underwood-ian tone by saying, 'This is just the beginning of my revenge.' Then he said, 'I cannot f***ing believe I won,' a curse that became even cooler when NBC bleeped it out," Esquire wrote.
Even though Spacey’s frank speech earned him a couple of open-mouthed stares, at least one of which was from "Orange Is the New Black" star Uzo Aduba, the emotion with which he spoke
moved many, the New York Daily News said.
Spacey talked about the late Stanley Kramer, the legendary actor-director who died in 2001, and called him "one of the great filmmakers of all time," the News said. The actor said he remembered Kramer saying the last time Spacey saw him and complimented his work, that he wished his films "could have been better."
"As I stand here tonight as someone who has enjoyed such an extraordinary career and in large measure because of the people in this room," Spacey said. "I just want it to be better, I just want to be better, but this is very encouraging."
His speech earned Spacey accolades online.
One person wrote on a YouTube video of the presentation, "What an inspiring and humbling speech. You can tell that all this man wants is to keep growing and experiencing different roles as an actor. Truly the mark of a great man, to be able to acknowledge his own faults (whether we really believe they were there or not) and want to learn and be better from them."
