Kevin Spacey made a surprise appearance at a Florida Panthers game Saturday, taking off his “Spacey Facey” cardboard mask, one of many the hockey team handed out to fans.
The “House of Cards” star was wearing a sweatshirt with an image of his face, part of a running joke that began a few months ago,
The Associated Press reported. The team began giving out "Spacey In Space" sweatshirts to the star of each winning game, who would in turn the shirt over to a fan.
The team posted a video of Spacey’s reveal on social media.
The meaning of the team’s inside joke isn’t widely known, however the joke spread and caught the attention of Spacey, who briefly visited players in the locker room after the Panthers lost to the Detroit Red Wings.
"It wasn't as fun as if we would have won, the environment in the locker room,” Nick Bjugstad told the AP. “We're down a little bit. We definitely appreciate him coming down, supporting the team."
The image of Spacey’s face floating in space took root as a good-luck charm after the team met Spacey on a road trip before a 12-game winning streak,
Sports Illustrated reported.
"The Usual Suspects" and "American Beauty" star also acknowledged his visit on Twitter, where the made a reference to the Spacey in Space joke.
The stunt also drew many cheers on social media.
