New York Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand in a speech to activists Friday dropped the f-bomb — twice.

"If we are not helping people, we should go the f--- home," the Democrat, who is known for using salty language, said during the Personal Democracy Forum, according to The Associated Press.

She also criticized President Donald Trump for failing to improve health care and the tax system.

"Has he kept any of his promises? No. F--- no," she said.

While describing the language as out of character for a U.S. Senator, CNN noted Gillibrand also used similarly strong language in a March interview with New York magazine and in her 2014 book, "Off the Sidelines."

A spokesperson defended the comments, telling CNN, "I think it's appropriate for a senator to be exactly who they are — Kirsten is going to continue to be exactly who she is and always has been."

Gillibrand isn't the first to raise eyebrows with her word choice. Democratic National Committee Chairman Tom Perez drew criticism for cursing during the recent "unity tour," CNN noted.

Gillibrand has been talked about as a possible Democratic presidential candidate in 2020.

Twitter users shared mixed reactions to the salty language.
