LA Street-Racing Tragedy Kills Two Spectators, Injures Another

A street-racing tragedy in L.A. killed two people and seriously injured another after the racing car went out of control and crashed into a group of spectators Thursday.

The crash occurred about 2 a.m. Thursday in an isolated commercial area when a Ford Mustang driver lost control, The Los Angeles Times reported. The male driver ran from the scene.

“The skid marks are circular in nature and also a straightaway on two lanes, which indicated illegal racing. They are fresh," Los Angeles Police Department Det. Bill Bustos told the Times. "They're looking for the driver of the Mustang. We aggressively try to control illegal street racing because it puts in danger everyone in the community."

Employees who work in the area where the race occurred, at Chatsworth Business Park, told the Times they frequently see skid marks in the street.

"Every morning, you see them every morning. It's even worse after the weekends," Maria Aguirre told the newspaper.

The Associated Press reported that police were unsure if the Mustang was racing a second car. Everyone who had been watching the race were gone by the time police arrived.

The Times spoke with an L.A. resident, who refused to be identified, who said that illegal street races occur in that area frequently and that he has attended many. He said he was not at the Thursday morning race, although he was invited.

The man also told the newspaper that social media allows the races to occur more often because notice can be sent out quickly. Also because of social media, though, the crowds are bigger and can get “out of control,” the Times said.

A witness to the crash told NBC Los Angeles that the injured man was screaming, “My leg, my back’s hurt.”
