Armstrong won a record seven straight Tour de France races from 1999 to 2005 but was stripped of the titles in the wake of doping allegations. For years, Armstrong denied he did anything to boost his performance but finally came clean last January in an interview with Opray Winfrey.
Armstrong was never charged with a crime, but the Justice Department is suing him for fraud in an attempt to recover tens of millions of dollars paid to his U.S. Postal Service cycling team. In December, retired Italian cyclist Robert Gaggioli alleged Armstrong paid him $100,000 in 1993 to let Armstrong win a race worth $1 million.
Meanwhile,
Bloomberg News reported Thursday that cycling’s ruling body is prepared to spend more than $3 million on an inquiry into how it oversaw doping controls during Armstrong’s career.
Armstrong took to Twitter to say he has not been contacted by the sport’s ruling body, but was ready to cooperate with an investigation.
