Lara Spencer, 'GMA' Star on the Rise, Divorcing Husband of 15 Years

By    |   Monday, 23 March 2015 08:12 AM EDT

Lara Spencer, co-host of ABC's "Good Morning America," is divorcing husband David Haffenreffer after 15 years of marriage, according to a statement the couple sent to the New York Post's Page Six on Saturday.

Spencer, who became a "GMA" co-host in April, married the former CNN reporter in 2000. They have two children together.

"After a lot of thought, care, and consideration, we have decided to end our marriage," the couple's statement to the New York Post read. "It's a sad decision that did not come easily, especially because we respect and love each other and our children. They remain our top priority. We will raise them and care for them together."

Haffenreffer left the journalism field to work as a real estate broker and is currently with Houlihan Lawrence in Greenwich, Connecticut, according to Page Six.

Us Weekly reported that the divorce is amicable and that the couple was on vacation last week with children Kate and Duff.

Spencer's star has been on a steady rise at ABC. She first worked as a reporter for WABC-TV and contributed to "Good Morning America." By 2011, she had become the morning show's lifestyle anchor and was then bumped up to co-host last year.

In a 2012 interview with Good Housekeeping magazine, Spencer said her life with Haffenreffer was full of laughter.

In describing herself as a wife, the anchor told the magazine: "I want to say 'hot, sexy kitten,' but in reality it's 'funny best friend.' All we do is laugh together."

In February, sources told the National Enquirer that morning show rival anchor Matt Lauer, of the "Today" show, has had his eye on Spencer romantically.

"Lara's marriage has not stopped Matt lusting after her," one source told the notorious tabloid last month, suggesting that the two have a "flirtatious" relationship. "[Annette Roque (Lauer's wife)] always suspected Matt has a crush on Lara. Matt just lights up whenever Lara is around, and they seem to share a lot of laughs."

Those rumors have not been substantiated.
