Lily Tomlin said Monday that she is considering marrying her partner of 42 years, Jane Wagner, now that gay marriage is legal in California.

Tomlin made her comments at the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences Pre-Emmy Performers Peer Group reception, E! News reported.

"We're thinking maybe we'll get married," Tomlin, the former "9 to 5" star told Malkin at the reception. "You didn't think that would happen. It's pretty remarkable."

On Aug. 7, the California Supreme Court refused Wednesday to revive Proposition 8, ending the last legal challenge to same-sex marriage in the state.

The U.S. Supreme Court struck down the Defense of Marriage Act and dismissed Proposition 8 in California in June. DOMA, which was in place since 1996, denied gay couples federal benefits, including Social Security survivor benefits, immigration rights, and family leave.

The changes have cleared the way for Tomlin, 73, and Wagner, 78, to become legally married.

"You don't really need to get married, but marriage is awfully nice," Tomlin told E! News. "Everybody I know who got married, they say it really makes a difference. They feel very, very happy about it."

But don't expect the couple to purchase wedding dresses for the big event, Tomlin said.

"No rings, no bridal dresses," she said. "Maybe we'll be dressed like chickens."

There are 12 states that have joined California in allowing same-sex marriage, including Connecticut, Delaware, Iowa, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New Hampshire, New York, Rhode Island, Vermont and Washington.
