The $150,000, pearl-covered Calvin Klein dress actress Lupita Nyong’o wore to the Academy Awards was stolen from her hotel room sometime Wednesday.
A spokesperson for
Nyong’o confirmed to USA Today that the dress was taken from the London Hotel in West Hollywood.
“Ms. Nyong’o was not in the room at the time of the theft,” the spokesperson said.
The dress featured 6,000 white Akoya pearls, something Nyong’o referred to when USA Today interviewed her on the red carpet.
“We'll see how many I keep on by the end of the night," she said.
“This is a terribly unfortunate situation, and we are working with law enforcement on their investigation,"
the London Hotel told E! News.
Nyong’o worked with designer Francisco Costa to create the custom dress.
“Lupita has become a close friend of the house over the last year,”
Costa told Vogue about collaborating with the actress. “From the onset, I wanted the dress to be graphic, yet warm and luxurious.”
That look came from using pearls of varied sizes. “We looked at a variety of different pearls — South Sea, iridescent, and natural — and decided that the natural pearls looked the most beautiful,” Costa told Vogue.
The end result, Costa told the fashion publication, was a dress that uniquely fit Nyong’o.
“The most important aspect of a red-carpet gown is that it stays true to the woman’s spirit and complements her natural essence and personality,” Costa said. “The most successful collaborations bring out the best of both the woman and the house.”
Police are scouring hotel video surveillance for clues, TMZ said.
