Those planning to visit Macy's to see Santa will have to make reservations for the first time this year as the retailer attempts to streamline the visits.

The retailer's iconic Santaland at Macy's Herald Square has become a must for New Yorkers seeking the ultimate in festive activities, but this year visitors will only get to sit on St Nick's lap if they have made an appointment to do so, The Associated Press reported.

As of Monday, families could make their online reservations to see Santa from 30 minutes to five days in advance, Macy's said on its website.

Admission is free, but the company noted that the reservation system would streamline things and allow for shorter waiting times.

"Santa's a popular guy," Macy's website noted. "He's a busy man this time of year, so a reservation is your one way in!"

There were mixed reactions to the announcement.

One shopper, identified as Vanessa, said she thought the change was good, CBS New York reported.

"That's right, because normally, when you was at Santaland, sometimes depending when you came, there was a large wait," she said.

A 13-year-old Bronx resident identified as Adriana told the news channel she was skeptical.

"Not everyone might get a chance to see him, because, you know, everyone wants to – and it's like, everyone's trying to make an appointment," she said.

Caroline Elliott of Florida told The New York Post that the new system took a lot away from the excitement and spontaneity.

"Sometimes you want surprises. When we were kids there were lines. But it's part of the excitement."

Others aired their opinions on social media.

"I am NOT happy," wrote one Facebook user, Debra Green. "For over 30 years Rich & I and then when our kids came along would travel to Macys Herald Square for our annual picture with Santa. I loved the lines and looking at all the kids waiting with anticipation to see Santa. We will be signing up and making our reservation to see Santa but this just is not right!"

Those not too perturbed about making a reservation with Santa can also enjoy the full Santaland experience, which comprises a 13,000-square-foot holiday display and indoor landscape, Time Out noted.

The display opens on Friday and is open through to Christmas Eve.
