Pop singer Madonna has apologized for using the N-word on Instagram to describe her son, E Online reports.

The often-provocative "Material Girl" singer posted a photo of her 13-year-old son, Rocco Ritchie, on the social media site. Ritchie was boxing in the photo, which was captioned, "No one messes with Dirty Soap! Mama said knock you out!" The caption was followed by the hashtag "#disn***a."

Madonna quickly removed the comment and wrote, "Ok let me start this again. #get off of my d**k haters!"

She issued a statement on Saturday, reading, "I am sorry if I offended anyone with my use of the N-word on Instagram. It was not meant as a racial slur ... I am not a racist."

She said there is no way to defend the word's use.

"It was all about intention," she said. "It was used as a term of endearment toward my son who is white. I appreciate that it's a provocative word and I apologize if it gave people the wrong impression. Forgive me."

Madonna posted a picture of Rocco just after New Year's holding a bottle of gin with the caption, "The party has just begun! Bring it! 2014." Drinking isn't legal in Switzerland until age 16.

After catching backlash for that post, she responded, "No one was drinking we were just having fun! Calm down and get a sense of humor!"
