Mariah Carey called her year on “American Idol” the “worst experience of my life” during an interview Thursday with an Australian radio show.
Talking with the “Kyle and Jackie O” and “Fitzy and Wippa” shows, Carey also elaborated on the feud between her and former judge Nicki Minaj, which made headlines during the show.
“I’m not going to get into what it was, but let’s just say I don’t think they had any intentions for us to have a good experience doing that show. It was not like . . . pitting two females against each other wasn’t cool. It should have been about the contestants instead of some non-existent feud that turned into even more ridiculousness. I would never do that again,” Carey told the radio hosts.
“But everybody else can like it,” she said, laughing.
In 2012, the angry words that flew back and forth between Minaj and Carey on the show were suspect in public opinion.
Gawker at the time speculated the feud was just for show, but added, “Of course, it's possible that the beef is real, and that producers are just letting it play out (or more likely, encouraging it) for ratings. Regardless of how true it is, even non-'American Idol' fans might start tuning in for the thrill of seeing two judges claw each other's eyes out. It's like NASCAR but with longer nails.”
Even if the feud was fake, as Carey hinted in the radio interview, it’s being carried on by fans, and apparently even Carey herself.
