Marijuana-Infused Soda Bottles Explode on Shelves at Wash. Pot Store

Bottles filled with marijuana-infused soda exploded on the store shelves of a Bellingham, Washington, pot shop, sounding like gunshots, a manager said.

Top Shelf Cannabis received an order of 330 bottles of the new soda from its maker, Mirth Provisions, at the end of September, KOMO News said. But when employees of the store came in the next day, there were broken bottles and glass all over the place.

Then the staff got to experience the exploding bottles for themselves.

"It sounded like a shotgun going off," store manager Zach Henifin told KOMO. "You can actually feel it, it was that explosive."

Because the pop created a dangerous situation, Henifin put on a face shield and protective clothing to get all of the remaining bottles out of the store and into a steel container outside, KOMO said. The bottles continued to blow up in that container for about 10 days.

"It's almost like bomb box because they randomly go off during the day," Henifin told the station.

Adam Stites, the founder of Mirth Provisions, told KOMO other shops had the same problem, which was caused by excess carbon dioxide that built up in the soda bottles.

"It was simply the fact that this batch had a higher yeast concentration, and one of the byproducts of yeast is excess carbon dioxide," Stites said. He is offering a refund to the shops, and is in discussions with Top Shelf about who should dispose of the remaining bottles.

The idea of exploding pot pop brought on some online jokes, including a funny headline from Seattle Weekly: "Pot Soda Is Actually Exploding Off the Shelves (Seriously Though, It's Literally Blowing Up)."

And someone in the insurance industry took the opportunity to make a point:
