Bombshell footage of Marilyn J. Mosby, the State's Attorney prosecuting the Freddie Gray case in Baltimore, shows her giving a fiery political speech to a church group days before getting the police report, and some say it's the latest piece of evidence exposing her bias against police.
On April 28, Mosby spoke at a prayer breakfast hosted by the Bilingual Christian Church,
The Christian Post reported. During her speech, Mosby, 35, said "we will pursue justice by any and all means necessary," alluding to the Gray case.
"Our young people — I know that they’re called 'thugs.' Those are young people crying out, there’s a sense of hopelessness in this city and there’s nobody that can touch them like you all can. The way that we all can," she told the gathered crowd.
"The criminal justice system has historically and disproportionately affected so many communities of color and what we’re seeing right now when we turn on the news and we open up the newspaper is that frustration."
The video appears to show Mosby's anger toward law enforcement. It is just the latest headache for Mosby, who was widely criticized for appearing to hastily overcharge the six police officers involved in Gray's April 12 arrest, which also reinforced perceptions that she is biased.
Mosby did not receive the official police report until a few days after her church speech, on April 30. She announced the charges the next day, on May 1.
"Baltimore State's Attorney Marilyn Mosby deserves credit for taking a stand against abuse in Baltimore's police department, even though the charges she announced against six officers are almost certainly inflated," the editorial board of
The Boston Globe wrote in reaction to Mosby's announcement.
In addition to being accused of overcharging the officers, former Baltimore Deputy State's Attorney Page Croyder
said in an op-ed for The Baltimore Sun that Mosby bypassed a grand jury and the homicide unit when she publicly announced the charges.
The Baltimore police union said that Mosby's decision was a "rush to judgment," and asked her to recuse herself from the case to avoid any conflict of interest stemming from her marriage to Nick Mosby, the Baltimore city councilman who represents the neighborhood where Gray was arrested. It also said there was a possible conflict involving Gray's family's attorney Billy Murphy Jr., who previously donated $5,000 to Mosby's election campaign.
This has left even liberal-leaning publications with questions about Mosby's conduct and abilities.
"Were her charges politically motivated, or perhaps calculated to calm protests? Had she overcharged the officers, picking unfair charges, or ones she couldn't win? Did she move too fast to charge the officers?,"
The Atlantic asked on Wednesday.
