Michael Douglas may have scooped up an Emmy Sunday night for his turn as Liberace in HBO's biopic, but it was his backstage comments about the country's prison system that took center stage.
Douglas, 68, took home the trophy for Lead Actor in a Miniseries or Movie for HBO's "Behind the Candelabra" at Sunday's Emmy Awards and recognized his 34-year-old son Cameron in his acceptance speech.
"And a shout-out to my oldest son Cameron, but hopefully I'll be able to see him soon," the veteran actor said.

Cameron Douglas, the son of Michael Douglas and ex-wife Diandra Luker, is currently serving a 10-year prison sentence for drug possession and distribution.
Backstage at the Emmys, Michael Douglas shared his opinions of the U.S. justice system.
"My son is in federal prison. He’s been a drug addict for a large part of his life. Part of the punishments — if you happen to have a slip, and this is for a prisoner who is nonviolent, as about a half-million of our drug-addicted prisoners are — he’s spent almost two years in solitary confinement," he told reporters. "Right now I’ve been told that I can't see him for two years. It’s been over a year now. And I'm questioning the system."
The actor was referencing an incident earlier this year when his son failed a urine drug test while in prison and was
sent to solitary confinement, according to the Daily Mail.
"Obviously at first, I was certainly disappointed in my son. But I’ve reached a point now where I’m very disappointed with the system," Douglas said. "And as you can see from what Attorney General Eric Holder has been doing regarding our prison system, I think things are going to be revived, regarding nonviolent drug addicts. My last comment on that is the United States represents 5 percent of the world’s population and we have 25 percent of the world's prisoners."
Douglas also mentioned wife Catherine Zeta-Jones in his acceptance speech, thanking her for her support. The two recently announced that they were taking some time apart, and the actress did not accompany Douglas to the Emmys. He was, however, reportedly spotted
wearing his wedding band, according to CBS News.
