Michelle Knight, the woman held captive by Ariel Castro in Ohio for more than a decade, shared the challenges of dealing with her emotions and how she plans to help other people on Friday’s "Dr. Phil" show.
Knight, along with Amanda Berry and Gina DeJesus, was rescued in May 2013 after being kidnapped by Castro in 2002 at the age of 21.
She first went on "Dr. Phil" in November 2013 for a two-episode appearance, and then again in May after her book, “Finding Me: A Decade of Darkness, a Life Reclaimed,” was published.
Friday’s episode was scheduled as a discussion of Knight’s “secret struggle.” A CBS news release said: “Having formed a deep bond with Dr. Phil during their first meeting last year, Michelle reached out to him for help dealing with the horrific trauma of her past. Knowing she detoured from the path to recovery, Knight made the brave choice to address the demons that continue to haunt her head-on."
In a video clip from "Dr. Phil," Knight talks about seeking out equine therapy to help her deal with some of the feelings and struggles she’s had since being released.
“I had so many breakthroughs, it wasn’t funny,” she says. “This place actually changed my thinking. For me, I want to go on along the lines of helping people. So the best way to do that is by being a therapist or being a motivational speaker, which is two things I want to do.”
Knight said on Friday’s show that she’s “really prepared for life” and is excited to see what is in store on her personal journey.
