A vocal critic of Miley Cyrus’ Video Music Awards performance, MSNBC host Mika Brzezinski butted heads with Matt Lauer on "The Today Show" Tuesday over the inappropriateness of the pop star’s gyrations.
Brzezinski already made her opinions clear on MSNBC Monday, when she said, “That young lady, who is 20, is obviously deeply troubled, deeply disturbed ... probably has an eating disorder.”
Brzezinski reiterated those thoughts to Lauer, who argued, “I think the only thing that surprises me is that we're surprised.” Lauer said Cyrus was paid for her performance on a show known for being provocative.

“There's pushing the envelope and there's raunchy porn that's disgusting and disturbing, and seeing a 20-year-old young woman in the process of her undoing,” Brzezinski told Lauer.
Cyrus’ performance broke records for most tweets per minute and the
20-year-old singer’s sale are increasing, U.S. News said.
While many are still hotly criticizing Cyrus, some are wondering why Robin Thicke, who performed with her, isn’t taking any flak.
Relevant Magazine questioned society’s double standards, asking why the “almost universal negative reaction” to Cyrus’ performance didn’t bring up conversations about Thicke.
“In our society (particularly in celebrity culture), women are repeatedly encouraged to be sexy, to draw attention,” the article said. “When it comes to MTV and the VMAs, the envelope has to be pushed further each year in order to achieve the same overwhelming response of shock, awe, disgust or whatever else.”
