Former heavyweight boxing champion Muhammad Ali took to Twitter to remind other boxing greats, including Floyd Mayweather Jr., who the best fighter is.
The tweet seems to be in response to a comment by Mayweather, who told Stephen A. Smith of ESPN: "No one can ever brainwash me to make me believe that Sugar Ray Robinson and Muhammad Ali was better than me. No one could ever brainwash me and tell me that."
George Foreman
took Mayweather’s side in an interview with TMZ, saying: "Pound for pound, Floyd is better than me and Muhammad Ali ever were."
The undefeated Mayweather Jr. is set to fight Manny Pacquiao on May 2 in Las Vegas.
Sporting News noted that Ali’s Twitter account is managed by others, with tweets originating from the 73-year-old legend including the hashtag #AliTweet.
Still, the social media smackdown has drawn widespread attention and media coverage.
Writing for The Washington Post, Cindy Boren said: “While it’s good to have confidence, particularly going into the big fight against Manny Pacquiao … there’s also something called perspective. Mayweather has no shortage of the former but could use some of the latter.”
Twitter users shared mixed reactions.
