A Northern Arizona University (NAU) shooting killed one and injured three others after an 18-year-old freshman opened fire in front of a campus dormitory early Friday morning.

Three male students were wounded in the incident in the parking lot of Mountain View Hall dorm, which was reported to police around 1:20 a.m., ABC 15 reported. The victim, a freshman student, has not been identified, and no reports were available on the conditions of those injured.

The suspect, Steven Jones, is in custody, the station reported.

Flagstaff Police Chief Greg Fowler told ABC 15 that Jones allegedly started shooting during a fight between two groups of people, all students.

"I was studying for an exam so I looked out the window and see two people running, and that's when I realized they weren't fireworks they were actually gunshots," Maria Gonzalez, a student, told The Associated Press. "How am I supposed to feel safe where I'm learning?"

Many went online to express their shock at what happened and to offer support to those involved.

Although unconfirmed by officials, apparently some of those involved in the shooting were with NAU's Delta Chi fraternity, as many of the tweets online sent their prayers to the house.

On Friday morning, NAU President Rita Cheng called the incident "isolated" and "unprecedented," according to ABC 15. "This will not be a normal day. Our hearts are heavy," she added.
