Pakistan Newlyweds Decapitated by Bride's Family in Honor Killing

Newlyweds in Pakistan were decapitated by the bride's family after they eloped without the family's consent, say local police.

Sajjad Ahmed, 26, and Muawia Bibi, 18, were married on June 18 in a Pakistani court. On Thursday, police official Mohammad Ahsanullah told CNN that the bride's father and uncle lured the couple to the Punjab province, where they tied up the couple and beheaded them in a so-called honor killing.

No witnesses were named in the case, and the family members turned themselves in. They have now been jailed.

The United Nations estimates that roughly 5,000 women are murdered in honor crimes each year around the globe.

Pakistan alone suffered 869 such killing last year, and bystanders and police rarely interfere with them, considering them private family affairs.

According to The Washington Post, "Not only do the crimes often go unreported, they also often go unpunished — according to Pakistani law, if the family of the victim forgives a suspect of a crime, that person can walk free. Because honor killings are usually committed by family members, this result isn't unusual."

Many honor killings take place among Muslim families and nations, however they are also reported in other countries like India, which is mostly Hindu.

Nidhi Barak, 20, and her 23-year-old groom, Dharmender Barak, were dismembered and decapitated last year for planning a marriage in the Indian state of Haryana, for example.
