Paul McCartney joined Bruce Springsteen on stage for a special "Saturday Night Live" performance of "Santa Claus is Coming to Town" over the weekend.
Springsteen and his E Street band served as the musical guests on the episode hosted by "SNL" alums
Tina Fey and Amy Poehler, according to Rolling Stone. Springsteen alluded to a big surprise earlier in the day on Twitter:
"The secret was finally revealed when McCartney casually strolled onstage with sleigh bells in hand to join in the festivities and help close out 'SNL's' 2015," Rolling Stone's Daniel Kreps wrote.
"The last song on this week's 'Saturday Night Live' was
pretty epic for a few reasons," USA Today's Carly Mallenbaum said. "1. Bruce Springsteen was performing with the E Street Band. 2. Co-hosts Tina Fey and Amy Poehler joined him for the song. 3. They sang 'Santa Claus is Coming to Town.' 4. Paul McCartney inexplicably showed up. The former Beatle got onstage to shake jingle bells and sing along as snow fell. It was magical."
Springsteen and his band also belted out classics "Meet Me in the City" and "The Ties That Bind" during their musical sets.
Fey and Poehler hosted as their movie "Sisters" opened this weekend against the motion picture juggernaut "Star Wars VII: The Force Awakens." "Star Wars," though, will get its chance to shine on the comedy sketch show Jan. 16 when the
franchise's new villain Adam Driver hosts, according to Variety.
Social media users happily responded to the Springsteen-McCartney pairing.
