Philly Block Party Shooting Injures 10, Including Baby

By    |   Monday, 22 June 2015 12:03 PM EDT

A Philadelphia block party celebrating Father's Day turned bloody when gunmen started shooting into the crowd late Saturday, injuring 10 people, including a 1-year-old girl.

Philadelphia police are looking for two suspects. One of them left the scene in a gold sedan, reported WCAU-TV.

Authorities told the television station that the shooting started about 10 p.m. and at least one suspect used a shotgun.

"It looks like they just randomly fired down the street and hit anyone in their way," said Philadelphia Police Lt. John Walker. "It was just a terrible situation."

Witness Valerie Jones said the shooting left stunned people with little time to react.

"We just heard shots and I got up, I picked my baby up and I just started running," said Jones.

Detectives told the Philadelphia Inquirer that about 50 people were attending the block party in Philadelphia's Mantua section. Walker said the victim toll could have been much higher.

A Penn Health System spokeswoman said seven victims were taken to the emergency room at Penn Presbyterian Medical Center. Authorities said a baby and children were being treated at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia and four men at Presbyterian.

Mantua neighbor Tracy Stewart said she and her husband helped an 18-month-old girl who suffered a grazing neck wound and was taken to a hospital. Police said a 12-year-old boy was shot in the chest.

A 22-year-old man suffered a shotgun wound to the right arm, a 26-year-old man was shot in the left side and a 46-year-old man was shot in the left leg. All three were listed in stable condition.

Police told WPVI-TV that shotgun pellets normally fired by hunters were used in the shooting.

"The bird shot has 9 to 11 pellets inside the cartridge," said Walker. "The dangerous thing with that is that it spreads and that's why we had so many victims here."
