Pippa Bike Tour Is Crossing US for British Heart Charity

By    |   Monday, 16 June 2014 09:58 AM EDT

Pippa Middleton and her brother James commenced on the Race Across America bike tour this weekend, showing off their British pride with matching suits that sported the Union Jack flag.

The charity event, which kicked off Saturday at the starting line in San Diego, California, benefits the British Heart Foundation, an organization Pippa acts as an ambassador for, People magazine reported. Pippa and James are also the siblings of Great Britain’s Duchess of Cambridge Kate Middleton.

"I was shocked to learn that nearly three times more women die from coronary heart disease than breast cancer," she said in a statement on the foundation's website. "I'm passionate about raising awareness amongst women of this killer disease and I look forward to working with the BHF to highlight to women the risks of heart disease and importantly, how they can reduce them."

The Middleton siblings are two of eight cyclists on the team, which will collectively cover 3,000 miles by riding through 12 states on their way to Annapolis, Maryland.

Pippa, 30, will ride close to 300 miles herself as the team tackles the course by relaying and switching off every 25 minutes.

After the race is complete, she plans to auction off her custom bike to benefit the charity as well.

ABC News reported that James is using the race as a short break from his recently launched marshmallow confectionary company called Boomf. The company helps print their favorite photos on marshmallows.
