An Ohio man has raised more than $37,000 from a crowdfunding Internet site after he jokingly sought $10 to pay for his first attempt at making potato salad.

Zack "Danger" Brown, of Columbus, says he's now considering throwing a huge public potato-salad party with the money, which started pouring in after his request took on a life of its own.

Six days into the campaign, he had raised money from more than 3,400 backers worldwide, reported The Associated Press.

The 31-year-old co-owner of a software company said he hasn't been getting much sleep.

Brown told The Columbus Dispatch that he did it for the "pure enjoyment and silliness of life."

The potato-salad campaign originated in a discussion about Fourth of July plans during a Google chat when Brown and his friends started talking about their favorite backyard-barbecue side dishes.

"I thought, 'I've eaten potato salad, but I've never made it before,'" the 31-year-old told the newspaper with tongue in cheek.

The "crowdfunding" idea involves websites that help many investors contribute small amounts of capital to projects that they read about online, and that might otherwise be starved for money.
