'Red Wedding' Episode Sets 'Game of Thrones' Tongues Wagging (Spoilers)

By    |   Tuesday, 04 June 2013 09:38 AM EDT

Fans of HBO's "Game of Thrones" were shocked Sunday when not one but three main characters — and one four-legged direwolf — were killed off in the episode dubbed "Red Wedding," sparking outrage on social media.

In a lesson on why not to get overly emotionally attached to fictional television characters, the "Game of Thrones" episode ended with the graphic murders of the remaining members of the Stark clan — mom Catelyn, son Robb, and his pregnant wife Talisa — along with a dozen or so wedding guests. Robb's direwolf Grey Wind was also killed off, though not on screen.

The brutal murders stunned the series' loyal followers, who took to Twitter to express their outrage against the show and George R. R. Martin, author of the "Game of Thrones" fantasy novels that inspired the HBO series.
