Reebok released special shoes that look like those Sigourney Weaver wore in the 1986 "Aliens" movie this week, and is facing a backlash from customers angry that they only come in men’s sizes.
The red-and-white Alien Stomper sneakers look just like those worn by Weaver’s character Ellen Ripley, and were released Tuesday for "Alien Day," an annual event that celebrates of the “Alien” movie franchise,
USA Today reported.
Angry customers expressed their frustrations on social media, but Reebok spokesman Dan Mazei defended the product, explaining that the shoe sizes on offer — U.S. men's 3.5 to 12 — represent "a typical size range for a unisex model."
The shoes sold out fast, and
The A.V. Club reported that the smaller sizes appeared to have been reserved for overseas buyers.
Reebok said the shoes were categorized on the website as men's shoes by mistake,
CNET reported.
"The Alien Stomper was mis-categorized on our US website as a men's shoe due [to] a technical error. While size availability varied by market, the Alien Stomper is a unisex style and was produced in sizes (US Men's) 3.5 - 12, which is a typical size range for a unisex model," the company said in a statement.
Twitter users reacted to the perceived slight with passion.
