The public got a rare glimpse of Ri Sol-ju, the wife of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, on Monday.
The appearance occurred during a celebration of the 103rd birthday of the late Kim Il-sung, the founder of North Korea and the current leader’s grandfather.
North Korea’s official newspaper, Rodong Sinmun, published a photo of the couple at a sports event at Kim Il-sung Stadium.
The marriage of Ri and Kim was confirmed by the government in 2012. They are thought to have a child, but that hasn’t been officially confirmed. North Korea’s first lady hasn’t been seen publically since December, when she attended a ceremony commemorating the death of Kim’s father, Kim Jong Il.
The anniversary of Kim Il-sung’s birth, which is Wednesday, is celebrated as the “Day of the Sun” in North Korea and includes a two-day national holiday with performances, art, exhibitions, and sports. Kim Il-sung ruled North Korea from the time it was established in 1948 until his death in 1994. His son, Kim Jong Il, ruled until his death in 2011, when Kim Jong Un took power.
Ri reportedly was wearing a ring on her left hand that appeared to be a wedding ring.
Little is known about the first lady, but it is thought that she is in her mid- to late-20s and is the daughter of distinguished North Koreans.
The widely circulated photo shows the couple clapping at the game or a halftime show of model gliders presented by the Pyongyang Air Club.
Twitter users commented about the appearance.
