Rudy Giuliani
said on "Meet the Press" this weekend that he wishes the media would pay more attention to the far more rampant problem of black-on-black crime than white-on-black crime, or unjust police brutality.
"I find it very disappointing that you're not discussing the fact that 93 percent of blacks in America are killed by other blacks. We're talking about the exception here" he said, referring to the killing of 18-year-old Michael Brown of Ferguson, Missouri on August 9.
A grand jury has been reviewing the case in which police officer Darren Wilson scuffled with Brown after he allegedly robbed a corner store, and shot him. A decision on whether to indict Wilson is expected any time.
Fellow panelist Michael Eric Dyson, a professor of sociology at Georgetown University and frequent MSNBC panelist, was enraged by Giuliani's comment.
"Mayor Giuliani speaks about what's, you know, unconscionable and what should be indicted. What should be indicted is the criminal justice system that continues to impose undue burdens on African American, Latino, and other poor people," Dyson explained.
Giuliani again said that the American people realize that the Michael Brown case, even if interpreted as a race-motivated killing, is "the significant exception." He again stated that the vast majority of black slayings are intra-racial. "93 percent of blacks are killed by other blacks," he said.
"Black people who kill black people go to jail," Dyson said. "White people who are policemen who kill black people do not go to jail," he said, mixing together the issues of intra-race violence between civilians and interracial violence between police and civilians.
"What about the poor black child that was killed by another black child?" asked Giuliani. "Why aren't you protesting that?... Why don't you cut it down so that so many white police officers don't have to be in black areas?"
"When I become mayor, I’ll do that," replied Dyson
"The white police officers wouldn’t be there if you weren’t killing each other 70-75 percent of the time," Giuliani said.
"Look at this! This is the defensive mechanism of white supremacy in your mind sir!" said Dyson.
