Russell Wilson, the Seattle Seahawks quarterback that led his team to a Super Bowl win this year, announced Wednesday that he and his wife Ashton Wilson are divorcing after two years of marriage.
“I have made the difficult decision to file for divorce,’’ Wilson said, according to a Seahawks news release. “Clearly, decisions like these don’t come easy. Ashton and I respectfully ask for prayers, understanding and privacy during this difficult time. Moving forward, I will have no further comment on this personal matter.’’

The couple met in high school and dated while in college. They married in January 2012 in Richmond, Va.,
according to the Seattle Times.
Wilson, who is playing for the Seahawks on a four-year rookie contract, is pulling in $662,000 a year. Some speculate he is exiting the marriage before contract negotiations begin, which are likely to net him an even higher salary given his success with the Seahawks. He cannot renegotiate his contract until the 2014 season is over.
“The fact remains that Wilson is most likely looking at the girl he married at 22 years old differently now that he’s an A-list celebrity with a massive amount of money coming to him in the near future,”
Sportsgrid reported. “It’s a painful reality, but the business of being a football player is complicated with many standing to profit from your success.”
