A Sachem East High School football player died after a freak accident during offseason training when a log fell on his head.

Joshua Mileto, 16, was participating in a drill Thursday morning at the Farmingville, New York school, that involved carrying a log overhead, Fox 5 New York reported.

Mileto, who was scheduled to graduate in 2019, was pronounced dead at Stony Brook University Hospital, the station noted.

Suffolk County Police are investigating the death, ABC News reported.

"The district is devastated by this horrific accident and words cannot express the grief we feel as a school community," Superintendent Kenneth Graham said in a statement. "We extend our deepest condolences to the student's family and friends during this terribly difficult time."

The district made a crisis intervention team and support services available to students and staff.

Community members posted about the incident on Facebook, The New York Daily News noted, quoting Anita Raum, whose son witnessed the accident saying, "This is beyond the WORST thing that could happen to our Football family and community. … Please keep this family in your prayers and all of his football brothers and coaches that are suffering so deeply. Our Sachem Community is hurting over this tragic loss."

Mileto was remembered on Twitter.
