“The Daily Show” correspondent Samantha Bee will leave Comedy Central to launch her own show on TBS, an announcement that took her off the short list of possible replacements for Jon Stewart.
Bee will work with her husband, Jason Jones, who is also a past “Daily Show” correspondent, on the TBS show. In the early development stages, the show “is being planned as a platform for Bee to apply her smart and satirical point of view to current and relevant issues,"
a TBS release said.
Bee will also be an executive producer, along with Jones, who announced his departure from “The Daily Show” soon after Stewart did. He tweeted, “For 9 ½ years, I have worked at one of the greatest TV shows of all time. But….it is time for me to go.” He added a subsequent tweet saying that he would be moving to another great show “@tbsveryfunny.”
"Like her fans around the country, we absolutely adore everything about Sam, from her straight-faced sarcasm and ruthless wit to her uncanny ability to mine comedy gold from just about any awkward situation," TBS Vice President Brett Weitz said in the release. "After watching Sam's work for years, we knew that her distinctive humor and talent belong at the front of her own show."
Bee didn’t say much Thursday about the transition, simply tweeting:
Bee and Jones already are working together on a 10-episode comedy series
“inspired by their own experiences with family getaways,” Variety reported. Jones will star in that show, which doesn’t yet have a title.
Fans online took an “it’s about time” attitude toward the announcement:
