Sarah Palin was speeding though her hometown of Wasilla last week when she was pulled over and given a ticket. She was going 63 in a 45 mph zone.

TMZ confronted the former Alaskan governor about the speeding ticket on Tuesday afternoon, and she explained.

"I wasn't speeding, I was qualifying," she joked, making a reference to racecar driving.

Palin obtained the citation on Wednesday of last week while driving her Toyota Tundra. The Huffington Post confirmed the citation, noting that it was posted online by Alaska's CourtView system. Palin was ticketed for going 10 to 19 mph over the speed limit, defined by law as a minor offense.

She said she planned to pay the ticket as soon as possible, which totaled $154.

She also joked that Van Halen frontman Sammy Hagar was partially to blame for the ticket, as the local radio station was playing his 1984 hit "I Can't Drive 55" when she was pulled over.

Typical NASCAR qualifying speeds are usually around 200 mph.
