Foot-powered scooters are among the most dangerous toys according to a study by the Center for Injury Research and Policy at Nationwide Children’s Hospital, which found that the popular toys played a leading role in a 40 percent rise in injuries from 1990 through 2011.

The frequency and increasing rate of injuries to children associated with toys, especially those associated with foot-powered scooters, is concerning,” the study’s lead author, Dr. Gary Smith, said in a statement. “This underscores the need for increased efforts to prevent these injuries to children. Important opportunities exist for improvements in toy safety standards, product design, recall effectiveness, and consumer education.”

About 3.3 million children were treated in emergency rooms for toy-related injuries from 1990 to 2011, according to the study.

Riding a scooter without safety equipment can lead to broken bones, lacerations and concussions.

"I tell parents if there were three things you could do to prevent an injury to a child riding a scooter they would be 'wear a helmet, wear a helmet, wear a helmet,'" Smith said, according to CBS News. "It is very important that children wear helmets; an injury to the brain can be life-long and devastating, which is why it's important to prevent that injury in the first place."

Twitter users posted mixed reactions.
