Seattle Octopus Makes Startling Aquarium Escape Attempt (Video)

By    |   Thursday, 05 March 2015 07:53 PM EST

Video of the wily antics of a Seattle octopus that tried to escape its aquarium is going viral, and talks of an "animal uprising" are rampant after another video last week showed an octopus jumping out the water in Australia to attack a crab.

Launching itself up the glass sides of its aquarium, the Seattle octopus’ attempted escape in late February was appropriately accompanied by the screams of nearby children.

Story continues below video.

Add those escapades to an octopus that grabbed a scientist’s camera and then turned it around to take pictures of him, and many people are noting the recent "uprising" of the cephalopods.

In fact, one Reddit user said to the scientist who posted the camera pics, “You taught them how to use our technology. You doomed us all.”

Another added, “8 brains. 8 arms. 8 guns/swords.”

And there’s no denying that octopus edging its way out of the aquarium in Seattle is a bit creepy. A little girl can be heard saying, “Can we go?” as others scream.

Seattle Aquarium workers pushed the octopus back into his home, but the near escape inspired Gawker to write, “That this particular octopus was thwarted on its path to freedom hardly matters. Witness the terror with which the assembled witnesses reacted to its muscular appendages probing the air — feel that very same terror yourself as you sit safely behind a computer screen — and ask yourself: What would have happened if the octopus had gotten get out? What will happen when another sea monster somewhere views this recording and is moved to put down its own suction-cupped foot?”

Seattle Aquarium staff told Fox 13 that it was just a new octopus, Ink, exploring the boundaries of his new home.
